Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order a Pfitzner Performance (PPG) gearset?

Due to the rapidly fluctuation economy, we are no longer stocking PPG product. PPG product pricing is based on the US-Australian currency exchange rate, and is subject to change at anytime. All gearsets are pre-paid, special order. We usually receive the product within 5-7 business days, pending availability.

How much power do the PPG Subaru 5 speed gears hold?

There are many factors that can cause gear failure. Engine power, clutch choice, tire choice, and driving style, are just a few of these factors. PPG recommends their synchro gearsets for use in vehicles up to 400whp. We have seen them hold much more than this. The dog engagement gearsets are recommended for use in vehicles up to 500whp.

Straight-cut or helical-cut gears, which is right for me?

The helical-cut design is belived to be a stronger design, however, PPG is able to fit a larger tooth profile on their straight-cut gears and claim that they are approximately 10% stronger than their helical-cut gears. This being said, their helical gearsets have held up great. Straight cut gears are quite noisey, as they have a very distinct whine. The PPG helical gearsets still make noise due to their huge teeth , but aren't nearly as loud as the straight-cut gears. Hybrid straight-cut 1-2, helical-cut 3-4 gearsets are available for the Subaru 5 speed. This is a very popular combination, and will turn a lot of heads while cruising throught parking lots, yet be tolerable on the freeway. Please contact us if you have additional questions regarding this topic.

I really want a dog-box...I think?

Dog engagement gearboxes are recommended for use in race cars only, as the engagement is harsh, and parts will need to be replaced as they wear. Dog engagement gears do not use synchronizer rings, allowing you to shift incredibly fast, and even without using the clutch. Dog engagement gearsets will require periodic maintenance to inspect and replace worn dog rings and corresponding gears. The transmission will begin to "pop" out of gear when the dog rings are excessively worn and need replacement. For most of our customers, synchro engagement gearsets are a much better choice.

What is the warranty on a Pfitzner Performance gearset?

PPG gearsets are designed for racing/off-road use only, and all warranty claims are subject to inspection and authorization by PPG. Labor charges to inspect the failed/defective parts are the customers' responsibility if not covered by PPG. For more information, visit PPG's Disclaimer.

How do I ship my transmission?

You will need to ship your transmission with a freight company, not FedEx or UPS. We recommend placing the transmission on a half pallet. You will need to secure it with banding straps, and cover it with cardboard. Please make sure that the transmission is completely drained, all sensors/switches removed, and labled appropriately.

What freight company should I use?

We ship with DB Schenker, exclusively. They have been very good with handing our freight, and we would recommend that you ship with them, as well. If the shipment is leaving from a place of business, we can send a call tag for pick-up, and shipping will be added to your bill. Please inquire with us for more details.

What is the turn around time for transmission rebuild?

Depending on product availability, the extent of damage to the unit, and the current workload here at Andrewtech, we will get you back on the road as soon as possible. Please contact us prior to shipping a transmission, as we can reserve a place in our schedule for the repair.

My car has a wierd problem...what do I do?

New noises, vibrations, power issues, etc. can be caused by a number of different things, and are nearly impossible to diagnose over the phone or email. We recommend setting up an appointment to come in and have our technicians run a full diagnostic on your vehicle.

What size turbo should I get?

Depending on what you want to do with your car, there are multiple options that might suit you. We suggest using our contact us form to tell us what modifications you have already made and what performance goals you have. Just remember...bigger isn't always better.

Does Andrewtech dyno tune Subarus?

We do not have a dyno here at our location, however TurboXS is around the corner. TurboXS is our go to shop for all of our UTEC tuning needs. We highly recommend the TurboXS UTEC Delta engine management for the majority of the cars we build, as we believe it works much better managing and protecting modified engines than a reflashed ECU. If the UTEC does not work with your setup, we will be happy to recommend some other options.

I blew my engine/transmission...now what?

Sorry for your misfortune :(. There are many options available to get you up and running again. We recommend setting up an appointment to talk about some of these options, pricing, and then schedule a time to get started on the build. Please contact us for more information.

What is Andrewtech Automotive's warranty policy/disclaimer?

Andrewtech Automotive warranties their labor for a period of 90 days or 3000 miles, whichever comes first. All parts warranty claims are subject to the parts manufacturers' authorization. All labor warranty claims are subject to Andrewtech Automotive's inspection and authorization. The customer is responsible for all labor charges for repairs unless otherwise noted. These charges may include removal, inspection, and installation of warrantied replacement parts, as most parts manufacturers will not cover these costs. The customer assumes all legal responsibilities and liabilities associated with the installation and use of parts designed or designated for racing or "off-road use only".
